From Eye-Tracking Vignettes to Teaching Modules

With the eye-tracking vignettes reaching maturity, we began organising them into graph-specific teaching modules, each bringing together several vignettes that address different systematic student errors within a single statistical graph type. Alongside this, work also started on the Course Concept Manual, which will provide teacher educators with practical guidance for implementing the materials in different educational contexts.

Presentation at AK Stochastik 2024

On 23 November 2024, Ayline Heursen presented the paper “Systematische Fehler bei der Interpretation Statistischer Graphen – ein Systematic Literature Review” (“Systematic Errors in the Interpretation of Statistical Graphs – A Systematic Literature Review”) at the Arbeitskreis Stochastik (AK Stochastik) meeting of the Gesellschaft für Didaktik der Mathematik (GDM), co-authored with Saskia Schreiter and Markus Vogel. The talk presented preliminary findings from a systematic literature review on students’ systematic errors when interpreting statistical graphs, laying important groundwork for the eye-tracking vignettes developed within the Eye-Teach-Stats project.

Building the Eye-Teach-Stats Learning Environment

As the vignette collection continued to grow, our focus shifted towards creating the project’s online learning environment. During this period, we developed the project website, integrated the learning materials into the MAMPF platform, and prepared the vignettes for expert review. By the end of 2024, all four graph types had been integrated into the digital environment, laying the foundation for making the Eye-Teach-Stats resources accessible to teacher educators and researchers across Europe.

Eye-Teach-Stats at EARLI SIG 3 – Conceptual Change Conference 2024

From August 27th to the 30th, 2024, the members of the Eye-Teach-Stats team contributed to Symposium 6 at the EARLI SIG 3 Conference, hosted by the Technical University of Munich. The symposium, “Beyond the Surface: Investigating Conceptual Difficulties in Statistical Graph Interpretation,” featured three coordinated presentations that explored how students understand, misunderstand, and reason with statistical graphs. Eye-Teach-Stats contributions included: “Students’ Conceptual Difficulties When Interpreting Statistical Graphs”; “Misinterpretations When Dealing With Statistical Graphs – In Light of Conceptual Change”; and “Conceptual Change and Cognitive Processes When Comparing Box Plots.” The symposium reflected the theoretical foundations and instructional goals of the Eye-Teach-Stats project: helping teachers recognize and respond to systematic student errors using eye-tracking-based vignettes.

Developing Eye-Tracking Vignettes

During the spring and summer of 2024, we worked in parallel on all four statistical graph types — histograms, case-value plots, dotplots, and boxplots — refining the eye-tracking vignettes towards their final version. Building on authentic student responses, eye-tracking recordings, and earlier rounds of development, we improved the structure, explanations, graph visualisations, and learning activities to ensure consistency across all four graph types. By August 2024, the eye-tracking vignettes had reached their final version, marking a major milestone as the project moved significantly closer to delivering a complete collection of eye-tracking vignettes.

Leuven Meeting: Building the Educational Framework

During our face-to-face meeting in Leuven on 7–9 April 2024, project partners built on the findings of our systematic literature review and established the foundations of the Eye-Teach-Stats course. One of the key outcomes of the meeting was distinguishing between observable student errors and their underlying conceptual difficulties. We also adopted the Four-Component Instructional Design (4C/ID) model (Van Merriënboer & Kirschner, 2018) as the instructional framework for developing our eye-tracking vignettes. These decisions continue to guide the educational design of the project.

Eye-Teach-Stats at GDM 2024 in Würzburg

At the 57th annual conference of the Gesellschaft für Didaktik der Mathematik (GDM), held in Würzburg, Germany, our team presented the latest work from the Eye-Teach-Stats project. The talk, “Schülerinterpretationen beim Verteilungsvergleich diagnostizieren und fördern: Eye-Tracking Vignetten als neuer Ansatz für die Lehrkräfte(aus)bildung (Diagnosing and Supporting Students’ Interpretations When Comparing Distributions: Eye-Tracking Vignettes as a New Approach for Teacher (Pre-/In-Service) Education)” highlighted how eye-tracking vignettes can reveal systematic errors when comparing data distributions.

Eye-Teach-Stats at the Thursday Colloquium in St. Gallen

On February 29th, 2024, Eye-Teach-Stats was featured at the Thursday Colloquium of the DOK programme at the University of St. Gallen. This informal forum for Ph.D. students and invited guests offered an excellent opportunity to present work-in-progress and receive valuable constructive feedback. Our talk, titled “Fehlinterpretationen im Umgang mit statistischen Graphen diagnostizieren: Eye-Tracking Vignetten als neuer Ansatz für die Lehrkräfte(aus)bildung(Diagnosing misinterpretations in dealing with statistical graphs: Eye-tracking vignettes as a new approach for teacher training)” introduced our innovative use of eye-tracking vignettes in teacher education. We discussed how these vignettes aim to strengthen teachers’ diagnostic skills in interpreting statistical graphs.

First Look – Sample Vignettes with Eye-Tracking

During our third project meeting, held online on February 2, we shared and discussed our very first vignette prototypes. These short learning modules combine real student responses with eye-tracking video, offering teachers a powerful window into how students approach graph interpretation tasks. It’s exciting to see our materials moving from research to practice—we can’t wait to test and refine them further!

Research Meets Practice – First Face-to-Face Meeting in Heidelberg

Our first in-person meeting took place at Heidelberg University of Education, where partner teams presented key research on how students (mis)interpret statistical graphs. We explored how these common difficulties could be made visible through eye-tracking videos, and how this technology might help teachers gain new insights into student thinking. It was inspiring to meet in person and see our shared ideas begin to take shape!
