Presentation at the ProDaBi Colloquium

On 14 January 2026, Ayline Heursen, Vuslat Şeker, and Lonneke Boels presented at Session 21 of the Paderborn ProDaBi Colloquium on Data Science and Artificial Intelligence in School. Their talk, “Bridging Research and Practice: Integrating Eye-Tracking Insights into Teacher Education on Students’ Misinterpretation,” introduced how the Eye-Teach-Stats e-learning course supports pre- and in-service teachers in developing diagnostic skills through eye-tracking vignettes. The team shared preliminary findings from several vignettes, focusing on how teachers reason about and interpret students’ misinterpretations of statistical graphs such as histograms and dotplots. The session offered an opportunity to connect the project’s research with the wider ProDaBi community working on data science and AI education.

Project

Freiburg Meeting: Bringing the Project Together

Project partners gathered in Freiburg on 11–12 December 2025 to review progress across all work packages and prepare the project’s final outputs. Discussions focused on data collection and analysis, case studies, the teaching modules, the Course Concept Manual, and the project website. As the project entered its final stage, the meeting provided an opportunity to coordinate the remaining work before the final dissemination of the project outcomes.

Presentation at the IASE 2025 Satellite Conference

From 30 September to 2 October 2025, Vuslat Şeker presented at the 14th IASE Satellite Conference, “Statistics and Data Science Education in STEAM,” hosted by the University of Münster. The talk, “Pre-service teachers’ use of eye-tracking data to diagnose students’ misinterpretations in statistical graphs,” co-authored with Lonneke Boels, Anita Alexander, Ayline Heursen, Saskia Schreiter, Wim Van Dooren, Frank Reinhold, Martin Abt, and Markus Vogel, shared findings on how a pre-service mathematics teacher used eye-tracking data to diagnose the frequency-value confusion error in histogram interpretation.

Poster Presentation at Onderwijs meets Onderzoek 2025

On 19 September 2025, the Eye-Teach-Stats project was presented as a poster at the seventh edition of “Onderwijs meets Onderzoek,” organised by the NVvW together with SLO, the Freudenthal Institute, and the Expertise Centre for Numeracy and Mathematics. The poster, presented by Lonneke Boels and Vuslat Şeker, introduced the project’s e-learning modules that help mathematics teachers diagnose and address students’ systematic misinterpretations of statistical graphs such as histograms, boxplots, dotplots, and case-value plots.

Presentation at ECER 2025

From 9 to 12 September 2025, Vuslat Şeker presented at the European Conference on Educational Research (ECER) 2025 in Belgrade, in Network 24 – Mathematics Education Research. The paper, “Using Eye-Tracking Vignettes to Improve Pre-Service Teachers’ Diagnostic Skills in Histogram Interpretation,” co-authored with Lonneke Boels, Anita Alexander, Ayline Heursen, Markus Vogel, and Wim Van Dooren, examined how pre-service teachers engage with eye-tracking data to diagnose systematic errors in histogram interpretation.

Testing Begins

A major milestone was reached as testing officially began across the partner countries. Pre-service teachers and  in-service teachers started working with the eye-tracking vignettes and completing the accompanying assessments.

Presentation at PME48

From 28 July to 2 August 2025, Ayline Heursen presented the paper “Systematic Errors When Interpreting Statistical Graphs – A Systematic Literature Review” at the 48th Conference of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education (PME48) in Santiago, Chile. The paper was co-authored by Ayline Heursen, Vuslat Şeker, Anita Alexander, Wim Van Dooren, Saskia Schreiter, Frank Reinhold, Lonneke Boels, Martin Abt, and Markus Vogel. By synthesising research on histograms, dotplots, boxplots, and case-value plots, the review identified recurring systematic errors and organised them into four overarching themes, providing an important theoretical foundation for the Eye-Teach-Stats project and the development of its eye-tracking vignettes.

Utrecht Meeting: Preparing for Implementation

During our face-to-face meeting in Utrecht on 10–11 April 2025, project partners brought together the different components developed throughout the project. We explored the learning environment hosted on MAMPF, reviewed feedback from the expert evaluation, and further refined the accompanying Content Knowledge (CK) and Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) assessments. This meeting marked an important transition from development to implementation, ensuring that the project’s learning environment and assessment strategy were ready for the next phase.

Presentation at the GDM Annual Conference 2025

From 3 to 7 March 2025, Ayline Heursen presented the team’s work at the 58th Annual Conference of the Gesellschaft für Didaktik der Mathematik (GDM) in Saarbrücken, marking the society’s 50th anniversary. The presentation, “Entwicklung von Eye-Tracking Vignetten zu systematischen Fehlern bei der Interpretation statistischer Graphen” (“Developing Eye-Tracking Vignettes on Systematic Errors in Interpreting Statistical Graphs”), was co-authored with Markus Vogel, Saskia Schreiter, Frank Reinhold, Martin Abt, Lonneke Boels, Vuslat Şeker, and Wim Van Dooren. The talk introduced how the project’s eye-tracking vignettes are designed to help mathematics teachers recognise systematic errors in students’ interpretation of dotplots, histograms, boxplots, and case-value plots, and sparked discussion with the wider German-speaking mathematics education research community gathered in Saarbrücken.

Eye-Teach-Stats at CERME14 in Bolzano!

From February 4th to the 8th, 2025, our team presented a poster at the 14th Congress of the European Society for Research in Mathematics Education (CERME14), held in Bozen-Bolzano, Italy. The poster, titled “Gaining Insight – Developing Eye-Tracking Vignettes for Teacher Training on Misinterpretations of Statistical Graphs,” introduced the Eye-Teach-Stats project to an international audience of mathematics education researchers. We demonstrated how eye-tracking data and student statements are combined into interactive vignettes that help future teachers diagnose and respond to common errors in graph interpretation.
