For teacher educators
Teaching Modules
The Teaching Modules are the slides for the synchronous sessions of the Eye-Teach-Stats course. They introduce the course and the modules, and support the discussion after participants have worked through the vignettes in MaMpf.
In the course, participants learn to analyse students’ interpretations of statistical graphs, to recognise how students interpret different types of graphs, and to recognise how these interpretations can lead to specific systematic errors. The course is based on research with primary and secondary school students, in which students’ answers, explanations and eye-tracking data were analysed together.
The complete deck starts with a course introduction, followed by five modules: an introduction to eye-tracking and one module for each of the four graph types. Each module is built around eye-tracking vignettes: short, authentic scenes of a student working on a graph task, combined with data showing where the student looked. The discussion slides carry notes for teacher educators with guiding questions in the speaker notes.

What it covers

1. Eye-tracking
What eye-tracking records and how the data are shown: gaze plots, heatmaps and gaze videos.
2. Dotplots
Analyse how students interpret dotplots, and how specific solution strategies can lead to systematic errors.
3. Histograms
Analyse how students interpret histograms, and how specific solution strategies can lead to systematic errors.
4. Case-value plots
Analyse how students interpret case-value plots, and how specific solution strategies can lead to systematic errors.
The course introduction is only available in the complete deck. You can use the complete deck for the first session.
